Everything’s blossoming. I spent an evening in a park near the city centre taking pictures of trees and flowers. My allergies are not too happy about the fact that spring is finally here, but I’m loving the sunshine and flowers nevertheless.

Carnival in Cologne
The Cologne Carnival is a carnival that takes place every year in Cologne, Germany. Traditionally, the "fifth season" (carnival season) is declared open at 11 minutes past 11 on the 11th of November. The Carnival spirit is then temporarily suspended during the Advent and Christmas period, and picks up again in earnest in the New Year. The time of merrymaking in the streets is officially declared open at downtown square Alter Markt on the Thursday before the beginning of Lent. Street carnival, a week-long street festival, also called "the crazy days", takes place between the Fat Thursday (Weiberfastnacht) and ends on Ash Wednesday (Aschermittwoch). The highlight of the carnival is Rose Monday (Rosenmontag), two days before Ash Wednesday. All through these days, Cologne folks go out masqueraded. The typical greeting during the festival is Kölle Alaaf!, a Kölsch phrase which can be translated as "Cologne above all!"

Carnival in Cologne is a big deal. It’s surrounded by tradition and depending on who you ask, it’s ranges from very political all the way to an excuse to drink, with layers and layers of fun and happiness in between.

Tiefenschärfe
The PhotoArgus has this to say on controlling depth of field. One of the best known methods is, of course, lens aperture and I love (love, love, love!) how much room to play with depth of field my new lens (f/1.4) gives me.
These pictures are all straight from the camera and unedited, and serve no purpose other than me going ooooooh, depth of field. Yes, I’m about five sometimes.

Exciting News (for me)
Say hello to my new baby camera lens. I bought this 50mm 1.4 Canon lens on Thursday and am still all kinds of giddy. It’s my first fixed lens and my second lens (I also have an 18-55mm kit-lens that came with my camera) and the fact that it doesn’t zoom is still a little strange to me – but then, I bought it for that very reason, to challenge myself to develop my photography and to force myself to think about composition a bit more.
Plus, with f/1.4, it means great control of field of depth and that it’s good in low-light situations, so I’m over the moon.

The most visited cemetery of the world
Père Lachaise in Paris is gorgeous. There’s quite a few famous people buried there (e.g. Oscar Wilde), but it was more fun to just stroll along and snap a few pictures than to actively seek out graves.

La Tour Eiffel
The Eiffel Tower is one of those “must-visit” places in Paris. I’m not too fond of it myself – mostly due to the crowds – and think that close-up, it doesn’t look all that great, but oh, from a distance it’s a whole other story.
Since I always end up in Paris with people who’ve never been before, every time a visit to the Eiffel tower is in order.

Sometimes I love my faculty
Why? Because it offered free cocktails on the introduction day for the first years and no one checked if we were all really first years – or even law students, in case of my boyfriend.

Maastricht: Bookstore in a church
I love books and while I’m not exactly a church-goer, there’s one church in Maastricht (Netherlands) that I’m quite regularly drawn to. Guess why?
I love that they turned this church into a book store. It has lots of law books and a lovely café at the back which makes me love it, but really, it’s worth visiting just for the looks of it.

Flowers and sunshine
It's above the 30°C (86°F), football is going to be on in two and a half hours and my brain is fried, but I thought for this weekend, I'd share some flowers. I've recently developed a love for macro-photography (recently, here, meaning: when I got a camera that made it at all possible) and flowers make for good practicing - they don't run away, don't get bored and don't complain about having a camera in their face.
